It will be halving bitcoin in six months

Did you buy the dip? At the time of writing this story, there’s 27,183 blocks left to be mined until the next bitcoin halving. These blocks will be mined more or less around April 2024. Thus bitcoin’s 4th halving will drop the amount of bitcoin given out to miners every 10 minutes to just 3.125 BTC.

What is stacking sats?

Amongst the bitcoin community, “stacking sats” refers to the purchase of bitcoin here and there. A sat or Satoshi, is the smallest division of a bitcoin. One bitocoin is made up of 100 million satoshis

What are these bitcoin blocks?

So far we’ve mentioned that on every “halving”, less bitcoin come out to feed the hungry cryptocurrency market but, how?

These bitcoin blocks contain a massive public record of bitcoin transactions. Every block of transactions is linked to the previous block via time stamps, this creates the famous “blockchain” that was all over tech news in 2022’s Bull run.

Bitcoin’s anonymous creator, Satoshi Nakamoto programmed the code so that every 210,000 blocks of the bitcoin public ledger (register of transactions) , the amount of bitcoin awarded to miners would be cut in half. This was done to accomplish two things:

  • Make the currency “deflationary”
  • Increase supply and demand of the digital asset

Let’s take a look at history

Guided by the economics of supply and demand, every time the supply of new bitcoin coming into the market every 10 minutes has gone down, it has led to some of this digital asset’s biggest price movements. When the price of bitcoin is making higher highs and lows, we are said to be in a “bull market”. In contrast, when the price of bitcoin keeps falling we are said to be in a “bear market”

  • The first halving was on November 28th, 2012. Miners went from 50 BTC per block reward to 25 BTC
  • The second halving was on July 9th, 2016. Miners went from 25 BTC per block reward to 12.5 BTC
  • The third halving was on May 11th, 2020. Miners went from 12.5 BTC per block reward to 6.25 BTC
